How Baby Sensory Can Benefit You & Your Baby!

Today's guest blog post is written by Helena Somers.  Read an introduction of her wonderful new adventure into Baby Sensory, which is now being offered to families in Counties Limerick and Kerry!

Baby Sensory was founded by Dr. Lin Day who is one of the UK’s leading parenting experts and a renowned author within the field of childcare and education. With over 35 years of practical experience working with parents and children and driven by the passion and commitment to offer the best possible service, Dr Lin Day developed Baby Sensory.  It was designed to provide the support and knowledge necessary to lead baby learning and development forwards in the most important year of a baby’s life.

The Baby Sensory programme has been designed specifically for babies from birth. The Baby Development activities stimulate the senses and help your baby develop.  We are confident that these baby activities will also delight and surprise both you and your baby.  We use a combination of original and traditional songs and rhymes to develop early communication skills and you will always remember the moment your baby first uses the signs of our Say Hello song which is played at the beginning of each Baby Sensory class. Classes are designed for babies from birth to 13 months.

Baby Sensory-  The various baby activities aim to build up a vocabulary of sensory experiences (e.g. visual, auditory and tactile), to enhance physical contact (massage, reflexology, touching, cuddling and rocking) between you and your baby and to promote the development of speech through the use of sign language, music, song and puppets.  Activities vary weekly.  All activities are excellent for developing physical, social and emotional, and language skills, co-ordination, awareness of the world, a love of music and the concentration needed for further development.

Language development– many parents experience intense frustration in understanding their baby’s signals.  Sign Language is one way of taking the guesswork out of parenting.

Physical development– although babies should always sleep on their backs, tummy time is an essential aspect of development from birth.  Babies need to be on their tummies in order to go through the fundamental movement patterns that stimulate both sides of the brain.

Social development- happy social play sets the tone for the acquisition of future skills such as cooperation, turn taking and sharing.

Emotional Development– massage is one sensory delight that really strengthens the bond because it provides an opportunity for parents to express their love.

The sensory organs for smell develop as early as 15 weeks gestation.  The newborn soon discovers which smells delight, settle and soothe him and which ones are unpleasant. In fact, the baby uses their keen sense of smell to learn about every facet of the outside world.

Baby Sensory introduces you and your baby to a world of rich and varied sensory experiences in a creative and enjoyable environment to encourage learning and development.

Baby Sensory Benefits for Baby

The most miraculous advances in your babys brain structure occur in the first 3 months of life.  During this period, an astonishing 2 million new brain cell connections are created every second. By the end of the first year, your baby's brain will have doubled in volume as a direct result of sensory learning from birth!

"A sensory environment rich in sights, sounds, smells and textures promotes brain growth, increases the capacity for intellectual development and forms the foundation for all future learning"; Dr. Lin Day

We want you to enjoy every second of this miraculous development. That's why everything we do has a purpose. For example, we've arranged the sensory area to match the distance your baby sees objects clearly, we've measured the decibel level of our instruments to ensure they are not too loud, and we soothe your baby at the end of the session by mimicking the sounds of the womb. If your baby needs to feed or sleep at any time during the session, then that's fine too!  All you need to do is come along!  We've done the research so that you and your baby can spend time focusing on each other and having huge amounts of fun!

I am a mother of 3 beautiful children, all under the age of 5. After having my third baby, I found that there was not many classes out there for me to take my new baby to ( I live in Kerry) and decided I wanted to look into something sensory based, as this is a growing concern with so many parents.  After much research I came across these classes and started my training by going to Cork, Galway and the UK.  I now run classes in Limerick and Kerry, and I'm hoping to build theses lovely classes across both counties.
